The aim of this Mini Digger course is to equip candidates with the skills, knowledge and understanding to operate earth-moving plant in a safe and efficient manner.

Course Objectives

The aim of this Mini Digger course is to equip candidates with the skills, knowledge and understanding to operate earth-moving plant in a safe and efficient manner. This course is designed for experienced participants.

Course Topics
  • The machines essential features and routine maintenance.
  • How to operate the machine safely and effectively.
  • How to avoid potential dangers.
  • Health and safety legislation.
  • How to give and understand bandsman’s signals.
  • How to move a machine to and from a site.
  • Starting and stopping the machine.
  • Pre-shift and daily checks.
  • Operating the machine.
  • Changing attachments.
  • Excavating and digging procedures/ practices.
  • Back-filling procedures/ practices.


A maximum of 3 participants can attend each Experienced Mini Digger training session.


Experienced Mini Digger training sessions are 1-day in duration.



On successful competition of the Experienced Mini Digger course participants will receive an Accredited Certificate. The certification will expire after 5-years.


Participants are required to apply to renew their training.

Course Entry Requirements

  1. Possess a current safepass card.
  2. Participants must be at least 18 years of age.
  3. Participants must have as least six months full time experience operating as a trainee Mini Digger operator in construction within the last two years .
  4. Participants must bring with them to training a passport sized photograph.
  5. Wear suitable personal protective equipment (PPE): safety helmet, safety boots, Reflective ‘hi-viz’ jacket, and gloves.
  6. Experienced participants must complete the candidate pack and return it  prior to course commencement.
    Participants must have the employer endorsement signed on their candidate pack.

Site Requirements

All equipment, materials and resources listed must meet the required specification and be made available for the duration of the programme. *

  1.  Appropriate classroom, with sufficient heating, light, seating arrangements, and appropriate welfare facilities, must be available.
  2. A designated area of ground with access control which has been deemed safe following a recorded risk assessment in accordance with the Safe Systems of Work Plan, and all controls must be in place.
  3. Machine Specification:
    • Serviceable Mini Digger with a maximum operating weight of six tonnes, which meets current legislation.
    • Fitted with a quick-hitch and general purpose excavating bucket
    • Be provided with appropriate devices that, where the visibility of the operator is restricted the device will remedy the hazards arising from inadequate direct vision,
    • Appropriate operator’s manual,
    • Operational seat-belt,
    • Flashing beacon and other electrical devices in good working order,
    • Appropriate mirrors,
    • A replacement bucket for changing purposes, the replacement bucket must be compatible with the quick hitch.
  4. An area of ground, clear of hazards which must include:
    • A level area to allow for excavations up to 2.0 metres deep,
    • A ramp not less than 18% (1:5.5) incline, however manufacturer’s instructions must be checked to ensure the machine is capable of operating on this gradient,
    • The ramp must be either one ramp with sufficient manoeuvring area on top or two ramps with a level area at the top to halt the machine. The length of the ramp must be at least 1.5 times the length of the machine,
    • Uneven, rough terrain,
    • A stockpile of material for loading purposes.
  5. A vehicle(s) for loading, this must be a rear tipping vehicle having a minimum capacity equivalent to 6 full bucket loads of the digger being used for the test. Vehicle operators must be competent and hold relevant CSCS card where applicable.
  6. Suitable certificated lifting accessories.
  7. Cones/materials etc to create restrictions for travelling and manoeuvring.
  8. Appropriate marking, sighting and lining equipment to ensure excavation levels and centres.
