Course Objectives

The Managing Safely in Construction Refresher course is designed to revisit key management responsibilities from the Managing Safely for Construction Managers course and provide updates on relevant changes in good practice guidance, legislation and standards.

Upon successfully completing this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify relevant health and safety legislation, codes of practice, and guidance notes.
  • Distinguish between the duties and responsibilities of the employer and employee, contractor and sub-contractor.
  • Verify the competence of the sub-contractors.
  • Master the basis of risk assessment and risk control.
  • Implement workplace precautions, relative to the risks.
  • Recognise the statutory requirements for reporting and recording of accidents and near misses.
Course Topics
  • Introducing managing safely
    • Briefly revisit the moral, legal and financial reasons for managing health and safety and how this is an integral part of the manager’s role.
  • Assessing risks
    • Definitions of hazard, hazardous event, risk, likelihood and consequence.
    • Factors to consider when carry out a risk assessment.
    • Illustration of a simple risk rating system.
  • Controlling risks
    • Revisit risk control selection and the best methods to choose, including consideration of ‘reasonably practicable’.
  • Understanding your responsibilities
    • Recap on managers’ health and safety responsibilities.
    • Briefly review the demands of the law and update significant relevant changes in legislation.
    • Update any significant changes in health and safety management system good practice and standards.
  • Investigating accidents and incidents
    • Definitions of accident, incident and near miss.
    • Main causes of accidents: immediate, underlying and root.
    • Accident investigation process.
  • Measuring performance
    • Importance of measuring performance for improving health and safety.
    • Use of key performance indicators and the limitations of reactive and pro-active measuring.
    • Purpose and setting up of audits (internal and external).

Participants

A maximum of 10 participants can attend each Managing Safely in Construction Refresher training session.

Duration

Managing Safely in Construction Refresher training sessions are 1-day in duration.

Certification

On successful competition of the Managing Safely in Construction Refresher course participants will receive an Accredited Certificate. The certification will expire after 3-years.

Renewal

Participants are required to renew their training by completing the Managing Safely Construction Refresher course again. Renewals should happen before the certification expires, or sooner if indicated by their company’s risk assessment.

Course Entry Requirements

  • Have a valid and in date certificate for the original Managing Safely in Construction training course
  • Bring Photo I.D. on day of Assessment
